Art Unions were Victorian organisations set up to function as patrons of art and The Art Union of London was one such organisation. Members paid an annual subscription which would be used to purchase contemporary art, such as this superb Doulton Lambeth ewer, which were then distributed to members by way of a lottery. This relief moulded and tubelined ewer with its double C scroll formed handle was decorated in light blue and grey glazes on dark brown by Doulton artist Lizzie Axford.
